How to be a great VA – Compliance

How to be a great VA – Compliance. Compliance is probably one of the most unpopular subjects any small business owner must consider. This makes it an excellent and desirable service for experienced virtual assistants to offer to their clients.

VAs also need to have their own business’s practical compliance under control. Whipping their systems into shape is the perfect testing ground for a service they plan to offer to paying clients.

Of course, it’s likely to be an unpopular subject for many VAs too. Having the right support becomes a necessity for VA and clients.

For all of those who know me or have met me at a networking event, you’ll know how much I like systems and processes. I love designing them as easy to use without requiring expensive or difficult digital tools.

I’m telling you this because I have found that the best VAs who offer admin-related services have similar inclinations towards processes.

Why is Compliance Unpopular?

Going back to my original point about the unpopularity of compliance-related work, the most common reason is discomfort because of a lack of knowledge of the requirements. More than this though, is a lack of understanding of how to translate the various regulations into practical actions.

The overall feeling is fear of not knowing what to do or getting it wrong. The “show your homework to the teacher” feeling.

What Does a VA need to deliver a great Compliance service for a client?

Funnily enough, the right client.

It’s extremely difficult to meet the requirements of the various regulations in a vacuum because a VA, even the best of VAs cannot make decisions on behalf of their client when it comes to the client’s business and the way they see and want things done.

The regulations such as those in the GDPR make it clear who is accountable for meeting the requirements within it.

Start as you mean to go on is the best and only route to success. This means excellent communication on what each is responsible for, and the hows, and timescales to avoid hiccups later on.

And what does a Small Business owner need?

The other side of the coin is small business owners who want their VA to handle their compliance admin confidently and competently. The right VA is essential, which you may already have or need to find. You must know what you’re looking for in both situations!

What is the (huge) upside for the Small Business Owner?

The benefits are a combination of time saved to use on the parts of your business only you can fulfil, and the confidence that the necessary compliance admin work is being done according to your needs and wishes. The result makes your business safer.
